people delete their accounts all the time...if I was an admin I wouldn't let that happen so easily, but maybe users should get the full control they want

No, it's that as the ideology that drove the USSR didn't prevent it from collapsing, we should not believe our rationale for our nation's (& empire's) existence will do the same for us.
